New Grant Program for Government Trailblazers: Improving Government Performance Measurement and Reporting (2007-2008)

The Center on Municipal Government Performance of the National Center for Civic Innovation (NCCI) has launched its new Government Performance Reporting Trailblazer Grant Program to encourage governments to involve the public in their performance measurement and reporting process and produce more accessible and engaging reports.

Grantees are part of a small but growing cadre of governments and government managers who are helping to advance the innovations in citizen-informed performance measurement and reporting. Grantees will be able to share their experiences and ideas and support one another in this trailblazing work through a listserv and national meetings. The network of trailblazers includes grantees from the 2003-2006 Demonstration Grant Program upon which this new program builds.

Successful grantees will receive national recognition for their work, will be featured in NCCI articles and presentations and will be identified as innovators and trailblazers in performance measurement and reporting.

Grants were awarded to governments in the U.S. and Canada that agreed to:
  • Disseminate their current performance report to the public at large or to a representative group of the public;

  • Get feedback from the public about the content and style of their present report;

  • Take the public’s views into consideration as they prepare their next annual performance report;

  • Apply some or all of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board's Suggested Criteria as promulgated in their Special Report: Reporting Performance Information: Suggested Criteria for Effective Communication, or for Canadian grantees, the Public Sector Accounting Board's Statement of Recommended Practice: Public Performance Reporting; and

  • Promulgate their revised performance report to the general public no later than October 2008.
